Ice and snow lanterns

Only 8 days to go until Christmas!

This weekend get outdoors to see what you can spot and make something really
cool (ice cold in fact) from the bits and pieces that you find in the woods :O)

If you go down to the woods today...

Find out what's happening in nature by printing our top spots for this week :O)

You can also find out what wildlife to keep an eye out for, and what's gone away for another year.

If you have snow where you live you can make snow lanterns by making some snowballs.
snow lantern
Place a lit candle on the ground and place the first layer of snowballs around it.

Gradually build up the layers until the top is above the candle.

You can leave your latern as a tube shape, or you can build it in the shape of an igloo.

What did your lanterns look like?

Ice art

Use an old saucer, or an empty butter tub you can make some fantastic ice art.

Fill the saucer or butter tub with water and add some of the bits and pieces you collected.

Place one end of a piece of string in the water (this is for hanging your icy materpiece).

Leave outside overnight or, if it's not cold enough, place it in a freezer for a few hours.

When it's completely frozen hang your ice art in the garden for everyone to see :O)

Send us a photo and tell us how long yours lasts.
