Make a marvellous minibeast masterpiece in our NEW creepy crawlies colouring competition

CLUB challenge

Friday 18th November

Did you know that hedgehogs hibernate
during the winter?

They make a cosy nest, curl up into a ball
and go to sleep until March!

Your challenge: Make a hedgehog from twigs

Collect

First you need to collect lots of twigs. The recent winds have blown lots of bare twigs onto the ground so there will be plenty around :O)

What sort of tree did they come from?

Squelch and splat

Find some thick mud and make a nice big, round mound of it. You can use a spade but Bev thinks it's more fun to use your fingers!

What sort of sound does the mud make as you pick it up and splat it down again?

Time for spines

Now you need to stick the twigs into the mound of mud to make the hedgehog's spines.

Here's a brilliant twiggy hedgehog that has been entered into our ARTventure competition.

What will you use for eyes and a nose? You should be able to find lots of items on the woodland floor such as acorns, beech nut cases or stones.

We'd love to see a photo :O)

Twig construction

Have you got some twigs left over? Build a tall tower out of twigs.

Here's how... :O)

Then you could turn your tower into a game of Tumbling Twigs!

  • build a tower of twigs by placing lots of layers of 3 twigs on top of each other
  • the first person removes a twig from the tower and places it at the top
  • the next person does the same, and so on
  • the loser is the person who removes the twig that causes the tower to fall down!

Twig races

You need two or more people and a stream to play this game. If you don't have a stream nearby you could use a pond or even a bath :O)

Each of the players chooses a twig. You then choose where your start and finish line will be (trees at the water's edge are great for this).

The players place their twigs in the water at the start line and follow them downstream until they cross the finish line. The player whose twig crosses the line first is the winner!

You could also try racing twigs that still have leaves or twigs from different types of trees. Does this make them faster?

Tell us about your twig race.
