The truth about vampire bats
Vampire bats are often portayed as evil blood-sucking creatures in films and stories, but they're not like that in real life.
Here are some top bat facts:
- bats are the only mammals that can fly
- vampire bats live in Central and South America
- vampire bats don't actually 'suck' blood or kill their victims - they just make a tiny bite and lap the small amount of blood that comes out
- vampire bats are the only mammals to feed entirely on blood (apart from baby vampire bats which drink their mother's milk)
- they are nocturnal. They sleep during the day, hanging upside down from cave roofs in complete darkness, then come out to feed at night - mostly on animals like cows and horses
- they need one to two tablespoons of blood each night to survive
- in one year a 100-vampire bat colony can drink the blood of 25 cows!
- scientists hope vampire bats could one day help human stroke victims - the bats have a special clot-dissolving substance in their saliva which could be adapted to treat people
