Make a marvellous minibeast masterpiece in our NEW creepy crawlies colouring competition

CLUB challenge

Friday 9th September

Ahead of you is a fantastic tree
house - wouldn't it be great to
climb to the top and look out at
the view from the tree tops...

It looks like the rope ladder is
broken - can you fix it?

Woods and hedgerows are bursting with
fruits and seeds. Without them new trees and
bushes wouldn't grow and animals wouldn't survive
the winter.

Your challenge: Take a break from school work and discover nature's harvest in the woods this weekend :O)

Find a wood

Our VisitWoods website has thousands of woods to choose from.

You can be sure that you know what fruit or seed you've found as you can see the shape of the leaf next to its picture :O)

Seed dispersal

Seeds are dispersed in all sorts of ways.

Some, like sycamore seeds, are blown by the wind. Some, like acorns, are dropped from the trees and buried by squirrels. Some are carried away by water and others rely on birds and animals to eat them...

Birds and animals eat the fruit then go away and poop the seeds onto the ground. Yuck!

Find out how seeds are dispersed with this iDial.

Have you ever seen bird or animal poo with seeds in it? Sometimes you can spot pink or purple bird poo in your garden. The bird probably ate blackberries :O)

If you see bird or animal poo with seeds in it, send us a picture.

Autumn folklore

There's an old saying "If the woods and hedges are full of berries, it will be a harsh winter". Have you heard this before?

It could be because people believed that nature was providing more food for animals to survive through a really bad winter.

There are lots and lots of berries around at the moment, do you predict a harsh winter?

Have a go at capturing autumnal colours in these art sheets. You could even make your own paints from natural items :O)
